Glass Cullet

Glass CulletWhat Is Glass Cullet

Glass cullet is recycled glass gathered from glass containers, and from breakages and inferior products made during glass manufacturing processes. Glass cullet can come in a wide range of shades and colors, though clear, green, and amber are the most common. Usually sourced from bottles and jars, and occasionally from plate glass sources, glass cullet has found applications in a wide rage of industries, and is proving to be a strong, clean, safe, versatile, and environmentally friendly material.

Advantages Of Glass Cullet

Environmental Benefits

It is important that as many uses as possible are found for recycled glass cullet, as the environmental impact of recycling glass is huge. A glass bottle buried in a landfill will take millions of years to degrade, whereas recycling a glass bottle is said to save enough energy to run a light bulb for a whole hour, or a computer for 20 minutes. When one considers the tonnes of glass produced every year globally (over 10 million tonnes of glass products are made in America alone each year), there is potential to give the environment a helping hand by recycling this glass, instead of throwing it away into landfills and making more. The process of recycling glass cullet is also fairly environmentally friendly, and does not produce toxic waste or by products.

Lower Material Costs

Glass cullet costs less to obtain than fresh virgin glass material, and often is equally useful for the intended purpose.

Lower Energy Requirements

Glass cullet has a lower melting point than new glass, and so it takes less energy to melt it in a furnace, which in turn saves a considerable amount of money in terms of manufacturing costs.

Extended Furnace Life

Due to the lower melting point of glass cullet compared with virgin glass, furnaces used to process glass cullet last longer as they are performing their function as lower temperatures.

Glass Cullet Applications

Glass cullet is suitable for many applications, such as new glass products, aquarium ornamentation, landscaping material, golf bunker sand, water filtration applications, as an aggregate in construction applications, in highway construction, as a fluxing agent in the manufacturing of bricks, on sports turfs, in septic tank systems, the list goes on, and still more applications for glass cullet are being found as manufacturers and construction engineers look for cheap and environmentally friendly materials with which to make their products and build their projects.

Glass Cullet Properties

The properties of glass cullet depend very much on the form it is being used in. Glass cullet can be crushed or powdered, or simply melted down to form entirely new glass products. Glass cullet is usually sorted by size of the cullet, and demonstrates sometimes markedly different properties even between different sized grades of the same type of glass cullet.

Crushed glass cullet looks and behaves much like natural sand, and for this reason is often used in applications where natural sand was once used. These applications include landscaping, where glass cullet mixed with sand or compost aids in soil drainage and in some cases, provides an optimized growing environment for various types of plants.

When used as an aggregate in concrete, glass cullet imparts additional strength and abrasion resistance to the material, and helps it maintain mass when drying.

When used in gravel and similar operations, glass cullet has a good frost resistance and operates well in cold temperatures.

Powdered glass cullet is a pozzolanic material, which is a term referring to its reaction with lime to create higher strength products. Thus glass cullet can be combined with lime to strengthen some forms of concrete and other such materials.
